In the sixties in London I was marginally involved in a 'Free Nelson Mandela' project, a rally or concert or something of the sort. I think I wrote some of the press material.
When the new South Africa emerged I was as inspired by the nation's new leader as anyone else. This was a man who set a shining example by only standing for a single mandate, and one who... above all... spoke uncomfortable truths.
Some of his utterances were certainly related to specific contemporary circumstances. But I am grateful to Habib Battah for bringing to my attention a couple of quotations which are not being widely disseminated in all of the current coverage and probably will not be.
